This is a low fat variation and a more healthier but just as tasty version of the traditional strawberry smoothie recipe. Smoothies are a great way to get the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants into your diet in a low fat low calorie way.
Strawberries have something called phytochemicals which are believed to help prevent some forms of cancer. As an added bonus strawberries also contain more vitamin C than orange juice. A handful of strawberries about 150 grams only contains 49 calories and less than half a gram of fat.
For this recipe you should wash, slice and freeze your strawberries. The reason for this is that it will preserve the strawberries, make the finished smoothie really cool to drink and also make it taste better. Blending the frozen strawberries when frozen seems to enhance their flavour.
You will also need one very ripe banana and some semi-skimmed or skimmed milk, vegans can use non-animal based milk alternatives. A banana is a good base for most recipes as it thickens the smoothie and give it extra flavour. Bananas are a great source of potassium and fibre, on medium banana, about 120 grams contains about 3 grams or fibre, 422mg of potassium and is also a good source of calcium.
Place all the fruit, chopped, into a plastic or glass tall sided container. Add milk to cover the fruit and then blend with a hand blender until smooth. You can use a food blender if you have one.
